As of May 18, 2012, the town’s labor force totaled 8,362 persons, of whom 7,943 were employed, according to the Connecticut Department of Labor. There were 419 out of work, for an unemployment rate of 5%, one of the lowest rates in the state.

In the spring of 2011, the town’s unemployment rate was 5.7% and in the spring of 2010, it was 6%.

The state unemployment rate in mid-May was 7.5%. It was 9.1% in the spring of 2011. The national unemployment rate was 8.1% in late May and 9% in the spring of 2011.
